First Edition 1999
The issue of Malta’s future relationship with the European Union (EU) has been on the local agenda for several years. Malta’s application was submitted on 16th July 1990. In spite of this there is at best marginal majority support among the Maltese population for such a step which would be almost irreversible for our country. What is more concerning is that such marginal support, if any, is based more on political inclinations rather than on sound arguments and persuasive judgement.
This book presents an unbiased objective picture of the implications of the choice Malta is facing. Conclusions are based on logical arguments and reasonable expectations. They are not based on pious hopes, theoretical hypothesis and generic cliches. Neither are they based on destructive criticism and positions of extreme insularity.
Such a complicated issue cannot be reduced to a straight yes or no answer. There are a lot of ifs and buts and some important information about what EU we will eventually be offered to join at the next enlargement is just not yet available. How much funding will Malta be entitled to? Will we be forced to change our constitution? Will there be redundancies in the civil service? These and other often asked but rarely answered questions are tackled in straight-forward simple language
